so for my landscape projects I chose one of mrs rossis landscape photos of a graveyard and I really liked the stone aspect of the picture and think it turned it out well however I don't like the Spanish moss or the grounds texture. the texture of the ground was really hard to convey with my style of painting and the texture of the Spanish moss was really hard as well. I think both things just got away from me the further into the painting I got. I do like the trees and the fact that the blue travels throughout the painting and balances it. if I was to go back I would try and lighten the colors in the painting as a whole and try and define the moss and ground better using a smaller brush.
so this is my mixed media piece. it was definitely fun to do because collage making is one of those processes where you can just let go and not be as precise as you would have to be with other mediums. I really enjoyed that aspect of it. I chose to do the red and white color scheme because it meshed best with the cards and I chose to do the cards because I have been on this solitaire binge and thought why not. if I were to go back and do this again I would definitely tone down the glitter I didn't realize how much gel medium I had on the matte board and so It got out of hand pretty quick but I think I corrected it pretty well. I'd also really like to find a good composition within the piece later on.
For my ceramics project I really enjoyed using the wheel. I had only used the wheel once previously so I wasn't very experienced with it. it was definitely a trial and error kind of thing. I had a lot of duds. but overall I really like it. it was pretty relaxing. if I were to do this project again I would definitely try and work on my control of the piece because some of mine turned out lopsided and kinda off. I'd also like to use some more tools to create patterns and texture on the clay. I haven't gotten a chance to glaze them yet but I'd really like to use glass in on some of them when they're glazed because I haven't tried that before and I really like the effect and depth it gives the pieces. (I'll get a picture soon don't worry)
this originally started off as a study of body movement but I didn't feel like I could convey enough motion through the ones that I had started so I decided to focus on bone structure through the skin. I don't really like this piece because I feel like it wasn't realistic. it was also my first experience using India ink so it was definitely a learning experience and I think that show. if I was to re do this piece I would probably not make the bones as defined as they are and make them more subtle the one part I did like was doing the red background because I feel like it makes the piece pop really well.
for my mixed media piece me and my mentee decided to do fun crazy bright colors because that's not something that we're usually able to do with our usual pieces. I'm really happy with the piece and it was really fun just to kinda let loose. also my mentee was really cool and we fed off each other's ideas but sadly mrs Sudkamp shot the spoon idea down. it was really a learning experience when it came to interesting compositions and it was more challenging than I expected it to be.
I think it's becoming very apparent how tired I'm getting of oils because my paintings seem to be getting gradually worse. This is my dog and my pride and joy and he still looks cute even when painted in oil paints. But sadly this painting is frustrated me no matter how cute it is. hopefully I can pull out a Hail Mary before the due date and make this something I'm proud of but until then I'm at kind of an artists block I just need a break. I need another color to break up all the blues in the painting I just don't know which colors to add and where I'm going to add them yet. stay tuned for more frustration and complaining.
For my self portrait I really wanted to try something new because I've used so many oils that at this point bob Ross would lose his marbles. Mrs. Rossi suggested the idea of printmaking and it really intrigued me. Printmaking is something I was not familiar with at all and the idea of trying something new was really exciting to me. It was a lot of trial and error and some of my tries looked like a drunk person decided to make art but this one came out alright and I'm actually really excited about it. If I was to do it again I would try and make the red just a little bit darker because it came out pink. I'd also trim it a little better so this tiny black marks didn't show up on my print. But technically this was a really challenging piece to do and I'm really happy with the outcome although it made me a little crazy. and I don't know weebly is making me type in italics but it is and I can't figure out how to make it stop so I'm sorry that this section of my paragraph seemed like it would have something more interesting in it.
for my nature vs mechanical piece I really struggled with my ideas. personally I don't enjoy the steam punk aesthetic of gears and coils and screws. the entire thing is just to harsh for me and I don't consider it something that would reflect me and my style of art. I know mrs rossi is rolling her eyes as she reads this. mrs rossi battled me on this project for a while and eventually we came to the compromise of the concept of butterflies in lightbulb switch one mechanical. I really liked the two larger butterflies they were my favorite part of the piece and I liked the highlighting on the bulbs although I wish it was toned back just a little bit more. something I wish I spent more time on is the smaller butterflies scattered in the background in my opinion they look really elementary to me and take away from the technicality of the rest of the piece. this was a really light hearted piece which is different than what I'm used to and as for the piece itself I can appreciate the work I put into it but wouldn't necessarily say I'm too attached to it.
for my perspective project I was a little hesitant to create a perspective project because I didn't really know where to go with it but I really liked where I ended up going. I really enjoyed doing the stack of boxes and using pen because it was a medium that I'm not that familiar with it. I don't really like the people but I ended up really liking the use of colored pens. if I was to go back I probably wouldn't have used the pen strokes that I did on the people and probably make them more proportional and realistic. overall it was a learning experience that got me used to pen and helped me learn how to work with it which is evident in the piece itself.
Okay so apology in advance to mrs rossi who will be upset that I only have a picture of the finished piece from the fair but I have progress pictures so hey you win some you lose some. But anyways this piece was something I struggled with to find an idea for but eventually stumbled upon a random photo I had taken in downtown Raleigh this summer of an alleyway and just kinda decided to go with. I further developed my style of painting and got to see what it looked like outside of my cigarette painting. it was really cool to watch myself develop and it was a little easier going into the project knowing what kind of brush strokes I was going to use and how I was gonna achieve all the different values and textures rather than just trying to make it look exactly like the picture. i really enjoyed doing this painting even though it was so large however I'm not really sure I like the way it turned out. I feel like I could've done a lot more than I did with it and the perspective could've really been improved upon. I don't know I just think I could've done better on this one which is weird because everyone else was like oh no it's good but I honestly prefer my cigarette painting over this one idk maybe I'm just looking at it from a weird angle and need to stop staring at my artwork until I hate it. but yeah good project. my moms gonna see it in the fair so that's cool.
